Real-time voice translation in Google Meet and Teams: your questions answered
Short answer: Yes. SottMeet is a Chrome extension that translates your voice in Google Meet and Microsoft Teams on the web as you speak. The other person hears you in their language about a second later, you hear them in yours, and both of you see subtitles. Only you install it, and a free Gmail account is enough.
The basics
Is there a Chrome extension that translates my voice in Google Meet in real time?
Yes. SottMeet adds real-time, two-way voice translation to Google Meet. You speak your language and the other person hears a translated voice in theirs about a second later. When they answer, you hear them in your language. Both sides also see live subtitles.
Does Google Meet have built-in voice translation?
Yes, but with limits. Google Meet's speech translation covers English with French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish only, needs a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan or Google Workspace Business Standard or above, handles one language pair per meeting and is limited to 90 minutes per meeting (Google Meet Help, October 2026). A Chrome extension such as SottMeet has no plan requirement and covers any pair of its 19 languages.
How do I translate a Google Meet call in real time?
Install SottMeet from the Chrome Web Store and sign in with your Google account. Open your Google Meet call and click the SottMeet icon. Choose your language and the meeting language, then press Enable. There are no microphone or speaker settings to change.
Is it a bot that joins the meeting?
No. SottMeet runs inside your own Chrome browser. Nothing joins the meeting and nobody else sees an extra participant.
Do the other participants have to install anything?
No. Only the person using SottMeet installs it. Everyone else joins Google Meet or Teams as usual, from any device or from the Teams app, with no extension, no account and no setup.
What is the difference between SottMeet and caption translators like Tactiq, JotMe or Felo?
Caption translators show translated text to you. SottMeet also speaks your words in the other person's language, so they hear you without reading anything. See the side-by-side comparison at /en/alternatives.
Where it works
Does it work with a free Gmail account?
Yes. SottMeet works with any Google account, including free Gmail. You do not need Google Workspace or a Google AI subscription.
Does it work in Microsoft Teams?
Yes, in Teams on the web (teams.microsoft.com and teams.live.com) in Chrome. Allow SottMeet on Teams once in the popup. It does not work in the Teams desktop app.
Does it work in Zoom?
Not yet. SottMeet supports Google Meet and Microsoft Teams on the web.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
No. Chrome on phones and tablets cannot install extensions. Install SottMeet on a computer; on the website you can email yourself the install link.
Which browser do I need?
Google Chrome on a computer.
Languages and quality
Which languages does SottMeet translate?
You can speak and be heard in 19 languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malay, Filipino, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Catalan, Russian, Arabic and Hebrew. Speech from the other side is detected automatically across 70+ languages.
Can it translate between two languages that are not English, for example Japanese and Spanish?
Yes. Any pair of the 19 languages works, such as Japanese ↔ Spanish, Chinese ↔ Thai or Korean ↔ Vietnamese. It is not limited to translating to and from English. Pair guides: /en/translate.
How fast is the translation?
Translation starts about one second after a phrase ends, so the conversation keeps its rhythm. Longer sentences take a little longer because the translation follows the meaning of the whole phrase.
Will the other person hear my own voice?
No. They hear a natural AI voice speaking the translation, not a copy of your voice.
How accurate is it?
It is AI translation and can make mistakes, especially with names, numbers and heavy accents. For contracts, medical or legal details, confirm the key points in writing.
Does it show subtitles?
Yes. Subtitles for both sides appear on screen during the call, and they stay in your browser.
Price and free minutes
Is SottMeet free?
You can start free: 5 minutes when you sign in, with no card. Adding a card gives you more free minutes without charging you, up to 30 free minutes in total. After that you pay only for the minutes you use.
How much does it cost after the free minutes?
It is prepaid per minute, with no subscription. US$10 is about 65 minutes, US$30 about 205 minutes and US$50 about 390 minutes. On the US$10 plan that is about US$9 per hour of translation. The full comparison is at /en/cost.
When am I charged?
Only while translation is turned on. It stops by itself after 3 minutes of silence. If you want, auto top-up recharges your balance so a long meeting is not cut off. When your minutes run out, translation pauses until you top up.
Privacy
Is my meeting recorded?
No. Audio is translated live and discarded. Meetings are not recorded, and subtitles stay in your browser.
What data does SottMeet keep?
Your account email and your minute balance, so billing works. Card payments are handled by Stripe; SottMeet never sees or stores your card number. The privacy policy is at /privacy.
