French ↔ English real-time voice translation for Google Meet and Teams
Short answer: Yes. SottMeet translates Google Meet and Microsoft Teams (web) calls between French and English in real time, by voice and in both directions, with live subtitles for both sides. Only you install it, and it works with free Gmail.
For French speakers in France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland or Africa working with English-speaking teams, and the other way round. You speak French and the other side hears natural English about a second later, and you hear their English in French, with subtitles for both sides. It works in Google Meet and Microsoft Teams on the web, and only you install it.
What Google Meet and Teams offer for French ↔ English
French ↔ English is covered by both Google Meet's speech translation and Teams Interpreter, but each needs a paid add-on or plan, and Meet's version stops after 90 minutes. SottMeet is the option when you don't have those licenses or need Meet and Teams both.
| Option | French ↔ English? | Details | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Meet speech translation | Yes, voice | English ↔ French is one of Meet's six pairs. Google says translations come a few seconds delayed. | Google AI Pro or Ultra, or Workspace Business Standard and above. One pair per meeting, up to 90 minutes. |
| Google Meet translated captions | Text only | French captions, shown as text. | Workspace Business Standard and above. Not on free Gmail. |
| Teams Interpreter agent | Yes, voice | French and English are both supported. | Microsoft Copilot license; listeners need a Microsoft 365 license. Not in Teams free. |
| Teams live translated captions | Text only | French (France and Canada) speech and translation. | Teams Premium or Microsoft Copilot (the organizer's license covers everyone). |
| SottMeet | Yes, voice + subtitles | Two-way voice about a second after each phrase, plus live subtitles for both sides. Google Meet and Teams on the web; not Zoom or the Teams desktop app. | Any Google account in Chrome. Only you install it; pay per minute. |
Tips for French ↔ English meetings
- Quebec, Belgian, African French. SottMeet understands French from France, Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland and Africa. Local words (courriel, char, septante) are usually understood from context; say key terms clearly once.
- Numbers like quatre-vingt-dix. French numbers are long (quatre-vingt-dix-sept = 97), and French writes 1 500,50 where English writes 1,500.50. Pause after amounts so the translation keeps up.
- Times and dates. French uses the 24-hour clock (15 h) and day/month dates. Add the time zone for cross-border calls (“10 h, heure de Montréal”).
- Vous or tu. English has no formal “you”, so the French translation picks one from context. Using titles and surnames keeps it formal.
Example: what each side hears
A Montreal agency and a US client plan a design review. An illustrative exchange. Each bubble shows what was said and, below it, what the other side hears and reads.
On peut livrer la première maquette d'ici le 15, si vous validez le brief cette semaine.
We can deliver the first mock-up by the 15th if you approve the brief this week.
Sounds good. Can we review it together on a call that Friday?
Ça me va. On peut la revoir ensemble lors d'un appel ce vendredi-là ?
Oui, disons vendredi à 10 h, heure de Montréal.
Yes, let's say Friday at 10 a.m., Montreal time.
