Tips for Italian ↔ English meetings
- Break up long sentences. Italian business speech often runs in long sentences with several clauses. A short pause after each clause lets the translation keep pace instead of falling behind.
- Titles like Dottore and Ingegnere. These have no direct English equivalent and may come out as Mr. or Ms. or just the surname. Introduce people by full name and role once.
- Numbers and payment terms. Italian writes 1.200,50 where English writes 1,200.50. For terms like “30% all'ordine, saldo a 60 giorni”, say each part separately and confirm in writing.
- Lei, not tu. English has no formal “you”; the Italian translation picks Lei or tu from context. Titles and surnames keep it formal.
